Trauma and Complex Trauma
(single situation and chronic trauma)
Have you ever experienced stepping on a piece of gum?
Sometimes, when you remove the gum, it is gone without a trace that it was ever there.
But sometimes, even though you have removed the gum, there is a residue.
This is what trauma feels like.
The sticky residue that remains after an upsetting event has ended.
Trauma is the residual impact of an upsetting event.
This can be a single event, that months after continue to bring up sleep disturbance, hypervigilance, avoidance of a person, place or activity, and sometimes flashbacks.
Trauma can also result from difficult relationships (abuse or neglect during childhood, bullying in friendships, toxic workplaces, or controlling romantic relationships). This is referred to as complex trauma and can be accompanied by a variety of symptoms (including rage, anxiety, depression, high sensitivity to stress, people pleasing, bullying, and personality disordered traits).
If these sound familiar, please connect with one of our highly trained trauma therapists.
